Trump Administration Revokes Over 175,000 Visas in Immigration Crackdown
Since President Donald Trump resumed office in January, the U.S. State Department has revoked more than 175,000 visas, according to an announcement made on Monday. These revocations targeted foreign nationals alleged to have violated visa terms, committed criminal acts, incited violence against U.S. citizens, engaged in fraud, exploited the immigration system, or posed national security threats.
A majority of cancellations were reportedly due to criminal conduct. The State Department emphasized that most visa revocations stemmed from various law enforcement encounters involving charges such as assault, driving under the influence, theft, drug offenses, reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud, and embezzlement.
The administration’s immigration enforcement has been notably aggressive in its second term, with President Trump committing to deporting the "worst of the worst." However, data suggest that many individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement during this period have no criminal convictions, highlighting tensions around enforcement practices.
Despite the crackdown, the administration’s approach has faced legal challenges and public protests, particularly following incidents involving the deaths of U.S. citizens during federal enforcement actions. Courts have invalidated several policies as violations of existing immigration laws.
The State Department provided examples of individuals whose visas were revoked, including those charged with violent crimes such as rape, sexual battery (including against a mentally disabled victim), kidnapping, human trafficking, domestic abuse, and child sodomy. Additionally, fraud-related cancellations were highlighted, with cases involving individuals alleged to have fabricated company revenues and engaged in deceptive schemes.
A spokesperson for the State Department told TIME that the Secretary of State exercises broad discretionary authority over visa revocations, stating, "The Trump Administration is protecting our nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process." This statement reinforces the administration's position on visa enforcement as a crucial element of national security strategy.
